Art for Change

A Beautification of Chennai’s Sidewalks
Project Background:

Year: 2017
Site Location: Luz Road, Mylapore, Chennai

With rapid urbanization and more people from the villages moving into the city, there is very little thought going into the planning of neighborhoods. A safe and walkable neighborhood is a result of ‘care for the street’ from the residents in that neighborhood. It creates a sense of ownership and connect to the physical spaces around them. With this in mind Cityworks initiated a wall art project on Luz church road to break barriers and encourage community participation in public spaces. The rest as they say, is history. After the successful completion of this wall, many residents around Chennai have formed communities to beautify sidewalks in their areas.

Art for Change-2

Trashonomics

Solid Waste Management problems in Chennai city have assumed unmanageable proportions. The convenience of the ‘use and throw’ culture has become so deeply ingrained in everyday lives of citizens, that it seems almost impossible to think of another way of life. Children are inheriting this culture and sustainable waste management is an essential life skill that needs to be imparted at school.

CityWorks Design Consultants Pvt. Ltd., along with 100 Resilient Cities (an organization helping cities around the world become more resilient to the physical, economic and social challenges they are facing) would like to use this opportunity to educate children in schools about Solid Waste Management and its associated risks and, to encourage a culture of environmental awareness and citizenship.

“Trashonomics” book that has been developed by Solid Waste Management Roundtable (SWMRT), Bangalore, is an application based book that includes several fun and practical activities and games, that gives students the opportunity to not only learn but also see the outcome and carry their learnings back home. This would be one attempt to build the much needed civic consciousness amongst school children, so as to induce behavior change in their homes and communities.
