CityWorks Design Consultants Pvt. Ltd., along with 100 Resilient Cities (an organization helping cities around the world become more resilient to the physical, economic and social challenges they are facing) are working together to educate children in schools about Solid Waste Management, its associated risks and, to encourage a culture of environmental awareness and citizenship.
Course
The main aim of this course is to ensure sustained and continued learning and practice about solid waste management. There are four to five structured sessions with the students of classes 6(optional), 7 and 8. Three schools have been selected in Zone 9- Chennai. Four to five sessions of 45 – 60 mins each will be conducted across five weeks(approx.)
Teacher Training Workshop
Cityworks conducted a three hour Teacher training program on 14th October to orient the
volunteers and school teachers on the program and also explain the teaching methodology. The workshop was attended by passionate citizen volunteers, school teachers, corporate volunteers and corporation officials (Education department). MLA Nataraj attended the event and stressed on the need for swift implementation. The workshop was a zero waste event.
Sessions Format
Each session will be conducted by one citizen volunteer who has subject knowledge expertise. Corporate volunteers will also attend the sessions. The entire program will be
covered in roughly 4-5 sessions (one session per week) The sessions begun on the 25th October, and 2 sessions have been complete in the three schools. Each session is conducted by one citizen volunteer for a group of 25 to 35 students. The students have learnt the basics of waste segregation, the different ways of composting wet waste and have taken part in activities involving understanding the waste generated in our homes and schools.
Follow up
Once the sessions are completed, Cityworks along with the volunteers aims to facilitate a
continued engagement with the school to ensure long term and sustained implementation
of what was taught. Depending on factors such as school population, campus space
available etc., we aim to implement permanent solutions for the schools such as – dry
leaves composting, wet waste composting, wet/dry waste segregation. The students and
teachers will be encouraged to take part in the process.
